The Word at a Glance
H4191 The Revelation
Moth Tamuth (מוֹת תָּמוּת)
God did not say to Adam, "You will drop dead that afternoon." The Hebrew is moth tamuth — literally "dying you shall die." An infinitive absolute doubling for emphasis. Adam did not fall over physically that day. What died in that instant was his spirit's fellowship with God. Physical death would come centuries later. Biblical death is separation first, and only sometimes biological cessation.
