The Rich Fool

What Happens When You Plan Without God

NT Stewardship 7 Scriptures

The problem was never that he worked, planned, or had resources. The problem was that he built his whole future and never once said the name of God.

Scripture never condemns wise preparation. Proverbs praises the ant. What Jesus exposes in this parable is a man who planned his entire future without acknowledging God, trusted wealth instead of God, and stored treasure for himself while never becoming rich toward God. Time becomes dangerous the moment we live as though we own it. We do not own time — we steward it.
1
Luke 12:19 KJV
"And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry."

The plan — many years assumed, God never mentioned.

2
Luke 12:20 KJV
"But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee."

The anchor — the assumption collapses in a single night.

3
Luke 12:21 KJV
"So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

Jesus names the actual failure: not wealth, but poverty toward God.

4
James 4:13 KJV
"Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain."

The same confident planning, rebuked in the same way.

5
James 4:15 KJV
"For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that."

The correction is not "stop planning" but "stop leaving God out."

6
Proverbs 16:9 KJV
"A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps."

Planning and submission are meant to work together, not compete.

7
1 Timothy 6:17 KJV
"Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God."

The antidote — trust relocated from the storehouse to God.

Luke 12:20

"But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?"

— KJV

The word "required" is a loan term — the soul is being called in. He thought he owned his years; he was only ever holding them.

God is not against planning. He is against prideful planning that leaves Him out. "If the Lord will" is not a superstitious phrase — it is an accurate description of reality.

You do not own tomorrow, so stop staking your peace on it. You steward time; you do not possess it.

Ask the diagnostic question the parable is built to provoke: if my soul were required tonight, would my years have made me rich toward God, or only comfortable?
