Qāvâ — Waiting on God Is Not Wasting Time

Isaiah 40:31

"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles." — Isaiah 40:31 (KJV)
Isaiah 40:31

The world treats waiting as dead time. Hurry it. Force it. Take control. Anything but wait.

Then there is the Hebrew. Qāvâ (קָוָה, Strong's H6960) means to wait eagerly, to hope, to look expectantly — and remarkably, the root also carries the sense of binding together, the picture of separate strands being twisted into one strong cord.

That changes what a waiting season actually is. When you wait on the Lord, you are not sitting still doing nothing. You are being braided to Him. The strands are being wound tighter. The cord is becoming something that will hold weight later.

This is why Isaiah 40:31 promises renewed strength to the ones who wait — not to the ones who forced the outcome. What feels like delay is often the exact season in which God is building endurance, wisdom, character and depth that no shortcut could produce.

Biblical waiting was never passivity. While you wait you stay faithful in prayer, service, holiness and work — doing what God has already placed in your hands today, and trusting Him with what has not arrived yet.

"Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him" (Psalm 37:7). You are not behind. You are being made strong. Read the full word study →
