Exagorazō — "Redeeming the Time" Is a Marketplace Word

Ephesians 5:15-16

"See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil." — Ephesians 5:15-16 (KJV)
Ephesians 5:15-16

"Redeeming the time" sounds abstract and religious until you learn where Paul got the word.

Exagorazō (ἐξαγοράζω, Strong's G1805) is a marketplace term. It means to buy up, buy back, purchase out of the market — to see something available and seize it before it is gone. Merchants used it. It carries urgency and opportunity, not guilt.

So Paul is not scolding you into busyness. He is telling you that God-given opportunity has a shelf life, and wise people move on it.

Which means redeeming time is mostly about refusal. You buy back your days by refusing to let them be consumed by sin, distraction, bitterness, idleness, fear, and endless scrolling toward nothing. Every hour reclaimed from those things is bought back at a bargain.

And notice Paul's reason: "because the days are evil." He is not naïve about the times. He is realistic — which is exactly why he says move.

There is an opportunity in front of you today that will not be there in the same form tomorrow. A conversation. A reconciliation. An act of obedience. Buy it back. Read the full word study →
