Mānâ — Numbering Your Days Is Not Counting What Is Left

Psalm 90:12

"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom." — Psalm 90:12 (KJV)
Psalm 90:12

"Teach us to number our days." Most of us hear that and picture a countdown — a shrinking pile of time, a reason to panic.

The Hebrew word is mānâ (מָנָה, Strong's H4487). It means to count, yes — but also to appoint, assign, carefully reckon. It is the language of a steward receiving something entrusted to him, not a prisoner marking days on a wall.

To number your days is to recognize that each one was assigned. Handed to you deliberately. Given for something.

And look at what the prayer actually asks God for. Not more days. Wisdomḥokmâh (חָכְמָה), which in Hebrew is not intelligence or education but skill: knowing how to live rightly before God.

That is the whole shift. A person merely counting asks, "How much time do I have left?" A wise person asks something better: "Lord, what have You given me this day to do for Your glory?"

You cannot add a single hour to your life by worrying about it (Matthew 6:27). But you can receive today as assigned — and spend it on purpose. Read the full word study →
