Chronos and Kairos — The Clock and the Moment

Ephesians 5:16

"Redeeming the time, because the days are evil." — Ephesians 5:16 (KJV)
Ephesians 5:16

English gives us one word for time. Greek gives us two, and the difference is freedom.

Chronos (χρόνος, Strong's G5550) is measured time — minutes, days, months, years. It is the word behind "chronological" and "chronometer." It is the clock on the wall, the number on your birthday cake, the deadline on the calendar.

Kairos (καιρός, Strong's G2540) is something else entirely: an appointed season, a strategic opening, a decisive moment.

Now look carefully at what Paul actually commands in Ephesians 5:16. "Redeeming the time" — the word there is kairos. Not chronos.

God never told you to squeeze more productivity out of the clock. He told you to recognize and seize the openings He places in front of you. You are not commanded to outrun your age. You are commanded to notice the moment.

So stop letting chronos bully you — the fear of running out, the comparison with people further along, the pressure of the calendar. Submit your time to God and start watching for kairos. He is far more interested in what you do with the moment than in how many of them you have counted. Read the full word study →
