Number Our Days

The Prayer That Asks for Wisdom, Not More Time

OT + NT Wisdom 6 Scriptures

Most people hear "number your days" and feel dread. The Hebrew word says something kinder — every day you have was assigned to you on purpose.

This is where a biblical view of time begins. Not with panic about how little remains, but with the recognition that each day is entrusted. Notice what the Psalmist asks God for: not more days, but wisdom for the days already given. A person merely counting asks "How much time do I have?" A wise person asks "Lord, what have You given me this day to do?"
1
Psalm 90:12 KJV
"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."

The anchor — wisdom is the request, not extended years.

2
Psalm 39:4 KJV
"LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am."

David asks for the same perspective — clarity about limits produces humility.

3
Ephesians 5:15 KJV
"See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise."

Paul frames the use of time as the dividing line between folly and wisdom.

4
Proverbs 4:7 KJV
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding."

Chokmah — the skill of living rightly — is the treasure worth pursuing.

5
Colossians 4:5 KJV
"Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time."

Wisdom and the stewardship of time are inseparable in Paul's thinking.

6
James 1:5 KJV
"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."

The wisdom Psalm 90:12 asks for is freely available to anyone who asks.

mānâ H4487

To count, number, appoint, assign, carefully reckon. To number your days is to receive each one as deliberately entrusted to you.

— Psalm 90:12

חָכְמָה
chokmah H2451

Wisdom — not intelligence or education, but the practical skill of living rightly before God.

— Proverbs 4:7

Psalm 90:12

"So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."

— KJV

The Hebrew mānâ means to count, appoint, and assign — the language of a steward receiving something entrusted, not a prisoner marking a wall.

Numbering your days is not counting down what is left. It is receiving today as assigned — handed to you deliberately, for something.

Change the question you carry. Instead of "How much time do I have?" ask "Lord, what have You given me this day to do for Your glory?"

If you lack the wisdom this prayer asks for, ask God for it. James 1:5 promises He gives it liberally and without scolding you for needing it.
