When Prayer Is Hindered
What Blocks the Channel — and How Grace Clears It
If prayer feels like it is hitting the ceiling, do not assume God stopped listening. Check the channel — every blockage the Bible names comes with a key, and every key is held by grace.
Scripture is honest that prayer can be hindered — not because God is fickle, but because prayer is relational, and some things damage a relationship. The Bible names them plainly: cherished sin (Psalm 66:18), refusing to forgive (Mark 11:25), wrong motives (James 4:3), contempt at home (1 Peter 3:7), a deaf ear to the poor (Proverbs 21:13), and empty religious performance (Isaiah 1:15). This list is not here to frighten you. It is here to free you. Every hindrance named carries its own remedy, and none of them puts God out of reach: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us." These are not locks. They are invitations to come clean, forgive, and reconnect — and there is no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 66:18 KJV
"If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me."
The verb is "regard" — to cherish, to hold on to. This is not about the presence of sin but about refusing to let it go.

"Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God."
The anchor — and the honest backdrop to the whole Gospel. This is precisely the gap Christ closed.

A closed ear toward God's word produces a closed ear toward our words. Listening and being heard are connected.

The contrast is stated plainly — and the righteousness in view is the one God credits, not one we manufacture.

"And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood."
Religious volume without justice and mercy. God rejects the performance, then in the next verses tells them exactly how to return.

"Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts."
A motive problem, not a method problem. The remedy is to purify the "why," not to pray louder.

Mark 11:25 KJV
"And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses."
Jesus places forgiveness inside the act of praying itself. Unforgiveness is the hindrance He named most directly.

"Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife... that your prayers be not hindered."
How you treat the person closest to you reaches the throne room. Contempt at home does not stay at home.

"Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard."
The measure you use for the cry of the needy is the measure returned to your own cry.

Double-mindedness, not doubt itself. The unstable heart is one that has not decided whom it trusts.

The master key. Every hindrance in this list gives way to honest confession — and God is described as faithful and just, not reluctant.

The guardrail on this entire group. Examine the channel — but never from under condemnation. That verdict is already overturned.

Key Word Study
בָּדַל
To divide, separate, set apart. The same verb used for dividing light from darkness in Genesis 1 — Isaiah names a real division, and the cross names its end.

תּוֹעֵבָה
Abomination, something detestable. Proverbs applies it not to the person but to prayer offered by someone who has deliberately stopped listening to God.

ἐγκόπτω
To cut into, impede, hinder — originally used of breaking up a road to stop an army's advance. Peter says contempt at home does exactly that to your prayers.

The Anchor Verse
Isaiah 59:1-2
"Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear."

Isaiah rules out the two explanations we reach for first — God is not unable, and God is not deaf. The Hebrew for "separated" is badal, the same verb used in Genesis 1 for dividing light from darkness. It names a real division — and it names exactly the division the cross was built to close.
Application
What This Means for You
Silence in prayer is worth a diagnostic, not a verdict. Walk the list gently: is there something I am regarding rather than confessing, someone I have not forgiven, a motive I have not examined, a person I have been unkind to? These are questions, not accusations.
Every hindrance Scripture names hands you its own remedy in the same breath. Cherished sin meets 1 John 1:9. Unforgiveness meets Mark 11:25. Wrong motives meet James 4:3. Indifference meets Proverbs 21:13. Grace holds every one of these keys.
None of this can put God out of reach. Isaiah 59:1 rules that out before it names anything else — His hand is not shortened and His ear is not heavy. Read the whole list from inside Romans 8:1, where the condemnation has already been answered.
