Waiting Is Not Wasting

The Hebrew Word That Means Both Hope and Rope

OT + NT Faith 7 Scriptures

The Hebrew word for "wait" also carries the picture of strands twisted into a cord. You are not stalling — you are being braided to Him.

The world treats waiting as dead time: hurry it, force it, seize control. Biblical waiting is nothing like that. It is active trust, prayer, obedience and dependence. What feels like delay is very often the season in which God builds endurance, wisdom, character and depth that no shortcut could produce.
1
Isaiah 40:31 KJV
"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles."

The anchor — strength is promised to the waiting, not to the forcing.

2
Psalm 27:14 KJV
"Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD."

Repeated for emphasis — waiting requires courage, not passivity.

3
Psalm 37:7 KJV
"Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him."

Rest and waiting belong together; anxiety is the counterfeit.

4
Lamentations 3:25 KJV
"The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him."

Waiting is a form of seeking, and God meets it with goodness.

5
Psalm 130:5 KJV
"I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope."

Waiting anchored to the Word rather than to a timeline.

6
Romans 8:25 KJV
"But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it."

Hope and patient waiting are the same posture in the New Testament.

7
James 5:7 KJV
"Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth."

The farmer's waiting is active, seasonal and confident.

קָוָה
qavah H6960

To wait eagerly, hope for, look expectantly — and to bind together, as strands twisted into a strong cord.

— Isaiah 40:31

Isaiah 40:31

"But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."

— KJV

Qāvâ means to wait eagerly and hope — and the root also carries the sense of binding, strands twisted into one strong cord.

When you wait on the Lord you are not doing nothing. You are being braided to Him, and the cord being made will hold weight later.

Waiting never means passivity. While you wait, stay faithful in prayer, service, holiness and work — do what is already in your hands today.

You are not behind. The season you resent may be the exact one producing the strength you will need for what is next.
