Shalam: Nothing Left Outstanding, the Account Closed in Your Favor
God paid the full price — not partially, not symbolically — to bring every part of you back to wholeness.
The Scriptures
"In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins."
Redemption is located in Christ and secured by His blood — a finished transaction.
"In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace."
The measure of redemption is the riches of His grace — not the size of your debt.
"So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit."
Tetelestai — "paid in full." The Hebrew equivalent is shalam: nothing missing, nothing broken.
"O Israel, hope in the LORD; for with the LORD there is mercy, and with Him is abundant redemption."
Redemption with God is abundant — more than enough to cover all that was lost.
"…who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people…"
The goal of redemption is a restored, purified people who belong fully to Him.
"…you were not redeemed with corruptible things… but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot."
The currency of your redemption was the priceless blood of Christ — the full price.
Hebrew & Greek
To be whole, complete; to make full payment; to bring to a state where nothing is missing and nothing is broken.
— John 19:30
To redeem as kinsman — the family member with the right and duty to buy back what was lost.
— Colossians 1:14
The Anchor Verse
Colossians 1:14
"In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins."
— NKJV
Redemption (apolutrosis) means a buying back at full price. The blood of Jesus did not make a down payment — it made shalam, the complete settlement of every debt.
Application
Shalam is the root of shalom. Your redemption is not partial — it is total wholeness. Nothing is left outstanding, because the full price was paid.
Redemption covers the consequences of sin, not only sin itself — the shame, the emptiness, the sense of being lost. Every debt that separated you from the Father has been settled.
When you are tempted to live as though your redemption were incomplete, return to tetelestai: it is finished. The account is closed in your favor.
