Godly Grief That Moves You (Nacham)
Feeling terrible is not the same as getting free. Here's the difference between sorrow that saves and sorrow that just sinks you.
The Scriptures
"For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death."
The anchor — sorrow is the servant of the turn, never its substitute.
"The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise."
The soft heart God receives.
"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."
God draws near the broken.
"Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded."
Sorrow that reaches for God.
"Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes."
Encounter with God produces the turn.
"And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner."
The prayer heaven answers.
Hebrew & Greek
To be grieved, to relent — the deep sigh of godly sorrow. The ache has a place, but only as the servant of the turn.
— 2 Corinthians 7:10
The Anchor Verse
2 Corinthians 7:10
"For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death."
— KJV
Sorrow is the servant of the turn. Godly sorrow works repentance — it produces the turn. It does not replace it. Worldly sorrow just spins in a circle: guilt, shame, guilt again, no change.
Application
Feeling bad and getting free are not the same thing. Godly sorrow produces the turn; worldly sorrow just spins in a circle of guilt and shame with no change.
If you have been sitting in guilt and calling it holiness, hear this gently: God is not looking for you to feel worse. He is looking for you to turn.
The tears are only doing their job if your feet start walking home. Let the sorrow move you toward the Father, not deeper into the corner.
