Prayer · Learn From the Praying Ones

Great Pray-ers of the Bible

Fourteen people whose prayers are on record — and what each of them can teach yours

"Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly."

— James 5:17

The Bible does not give us a theory of prayer. It gives us people praying — and it records what they said, including the parts that were desperate, unpolished, or barely audible. That is deliberate. You can learn more about prayer from watching Hannah at Shiloh than from any definition.

Read these as company rather than as a standard to reach. James makes the point directly about Elijah: he was a man subject to like passions as we are. Not a different species. Not spiritually elite. The same raw material you are working with.

A Note on How Paul Prayed

If you only study one of these, study Paul's prayers for the churches — Ephesians 1 and 3, Philippians 1, Colossians 1. What is striking is not what he asks for but what he leaves out. There is almost nothing about circumstances: no travel plans, no finances, no relief from persecution, though all three were pressing.

Instead he asks for the spirit of wisdom and revelation, for the eyes of their understanding to be enlightened, for strength in the inner man, for love that abounds in knowledge, for fruitfulness in every good work. He is praying for what will still matter after the circumstance resolves.

That is a usable model for the next time you are praying for someone and do not know what to ask.
