The Willingness of God Settled Once and for All
A leper asked if Jesus was willing. The answer came with no hesitation.
The Scriptures
"Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus… saying, I will; be thou clean."
The leper doubted willingness; Jesus removed the doubt with two words: "I will."
"…who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil…"
Jesus' healing was His pattern — "all who were oppressed," not a selective few.
"…healing every sickness and every disease among the people."
"Every" sickness, "every" disease — the scope of His healing ministry was comprehensive.
"And Jesus, moved with compassion… I will; be thou clean."
His healing flowed from compassion — the heart behind the act.
"…he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them."
Every one. No one was turned away as outside the "all."
"…and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick."
Compassion repeatedly named as the motive of His healing.
"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."
The Healer of the Gospels is unchanged. His willingness then is His willingness now.
The Anchor Verse
Matthew 8:3
"And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed."
— KJV
The leper questioned the willingness, not the power. Jesus answered the willingness directly — "I will" — and then touched the untouchable. His answer to the question of God's desire to heal is recorded for everyone who carries the same doubt.
Application
The leper's theology is one many believers quietly share: "I know He can — I'm just not sure He wants to, for me." Jesus addressed that exact uncertainty without a moment's hesitation. The Greek verb here for "heal," iaomai, points to God as the source — and the source said "I will."
Acts 10:38 says He healed "all" who were oppressed of the devil. The word "all" leaves no category of person standing outside the reach of His willingness. Whoever has been told they are somehow outside the "all" is being told something the verse contradicts.
Hebrews 13:8 closes the gap of time. The Jesus who said "I will" to the leper is the same yesterday, today, and forever. His answer was not for one man on one day. It is the standing posture of God toward the sick.
