Mishneh — Why God Promises the Prisoner of Hope a Double Portion, Not a Break-Even
"Return to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope. Even today I declare that I will restore double to you." — Zechariah 9:12 (NKJV)— Zechariah 9:12
"Prisoners of hope" is one of the most unusual phrases in Scripture. In a world that tells you to be realistic about your losses, God calls His people prisoners — not of despair, not of bitterness, not of regret — but of hope. So bound to hope in God that you cannot escape it.
And to those prisoners, God makes a stunning promise: mishneh (מִשְׁנֶה, Strong's H4932) — a double restoration. Not equal. Not just what was lost returned. Double.
The word matters because mishneh was a legal term. In Deuteronomy 21:17, the double portion was the inheritance right of the firstborn son — twice what any other heir received. God is saying that those who hold onto hope in Him receive an inheritance beyond what was taken from them: the firstborn's portion.
This is not a passive promise. Zechariah 9:12 begins with "return to the stronghold" — an active step toward God's provision. You participate in your double portion by refusing to let go of hope and deliberately returning to the place of God's strength. From that position, the double is declared by God Himself. Do not settle for recovery when God is offering double.
