The Word Translated "Workmanship" Is Where English Gets "Poem"

Did you know that when Paul calls you God's "workmanship," he uses the Greek word our word "poem" descends from?

Ephesians 2:10

"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." — Ephesians 2:10 (KJV)
Ephesians 2:10

Did you know the word behind "workmanship" in Ephesians 2:10 is poiēma (ποίημα, Strong's G4161) — the term English draws "poem" and "poetry" from?

It means something made, crafted, formed with intention. In classical Greek it covered any deliberate creation, but its literary use is what survived into English.

"Workmanship" is a fine translation, though in modern ears it can suggest factory output. Poiēma leans the other way — toward something composed, worked over, meant.

And a poem is never judged by length. A short one can carry more weight than volumes of noise. Which quietly reframes the anxiety most of us carry about time: a life does not need more years to have meaning. It needs an Author.

Note too what the verse says God prepared: good works "before ordained that we should walk in them" — laid out in advance. Your days are not empty containers you must scramble to fill. Discover the full word study →

Why It Matters

You are not an accident, not overlooked, and not a meaningless stack of days. If you are God's poem, then every line — including the seasons that felt wasted — is being written by Someone who knows how the piece ends.
