"Restore the Years the Locust Hath Eaten" Shares a Root With Shalom

Did you know the promise to restore lost years comes from the same Hebrew root as the word for peace?

Joel 2:25

"And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten." — Joel 2:25 (KJV)
Joel 2:25

Did you know the famous promise of Joel 2:25 is built on the root shālam (שָׁלַם, Strong's H7999) — to make complete, repay, restore, make whole?

That is the same root family behind shalom (שָׁלוֹם) — a word usually rendered "peace," but which carries the fuller sense of wholeness, well-being, soundness, and nothing missing.

The context matters. Joel is speaking to a people who had watched swarming locusts strip their crops, their livelihood, and every visible sign of fruitfulness. Into that devastation God promises not merely survival, but restoration — a making-whole.

Notice what the promise does and does not say. God does not undo history or rewind the calendar. He restores — bringing fruitfulness, healing, wisdom and purpose out of the very seasons that looked barren, and making the years that remain count.

That is why regret has no authority over a surrendered past. The enemy uses lost time to produce shame; God uses repentance and surrender to produce restoration. Discover the full word study →

Why It Matters

If you carry sorrow over years you believe you wasted — to sin, fear, sickness, bad decisions, or seasons stolen from you — this promise is aimed at you. God specializes in making barren seasons into testimony.
