Jehovah-Rapha Was the First Covenant Name God Revealed After Delivering Israel From Egypt
Did you know that the very first thing God did after leading Israel through the Red Sea was reveal Himself as a healer?
"I am the LORD that healeth thee." — Exodus 15:26, KJV— Exodus 15:26
The sequence matters in Exodus 15.
Chapter 14: Israel crosses the Red Sea. Chapter 15:1–21: Moses and Miriam lead worship. Chapter 15:22: Israel enters the wilderness of Shur. Chapter 15:23–25: Bitter water at Marah is healed when Moses throws a tree into it. Chapter 15:26: God speaks.
"If you diligently heed the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the LORD who heals you."
Before the Ten Commandments were given at Sinai. Before the Levitical law was established. Before the tabernacle was built. Before any formal covenant structure was in place — God introduced Himself as the God who heals.
The healing of the bitter water was itself a sign. The Hebrew word used when Moses threw the tree into the water to make it sweet is from the root rapha — the same word in the covenant name declared immediately afterward. God healed the water, and then He declared: this is who I am. This is my name. This is what I do.
The seven covenant names of God — Jehovah-Jireh, Jehovah-Rapha, Jehovah-Nissi, Jehovah-Shalom, Jehovah-Rohi, Jehovah-Tsidkenu, Jehovah-Shammah — each reveal a dimension of His character. They are not titles He assumed for a season. They are permanent declarations of nature. Jehovah-Rapha has not retired.
Why It Matters
God's healing covenant predates the Mosaic law. It was not a New Testament addition, and it was not a special dispensation for one era. It is one of the oldest self-revelations God gave to His people — and it has been His name ever since.
