The Name "Israel" Means "He Wrestles with God"
Why did God rename Jacob after a wrestling match?
"Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome."— Genesis 32:28
After wrestling all night with a mysterious figure at the Jabbok River, Jacob received a new name: Israel — from the Hebrew yisra (to struggle, to contend) and El (God).
In the ancient world, a name change signaled a new identity. Jacob — meaning "heel-grabber" or "supplanter" — had spent his life grasping and scheming. But after an encounter where he refused to let go until he received a blessing, God renamed him.
The name Israel doesn't mean "the one who defeated God." It means the one who persevered with God. The entire nation that came from him carries a name that speaks of tenacious, honest engagement with the Almighty — not passive obedience, but active encounter.
Why It Matters
God is not looking for people who perform perfectly. He honours those who engage with Him honestly, persistently, and with everything they have.
