The Word "Golem" Appears Only Once in the Entire Bible — and It's About You
Did you know the Bible uses a word for you in Psalm 139 that appears nowhere else in all of Scripture?
"Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them." — Psalm 139:16 (ESV)— Psalm 139:16
The Hebrew word in Psalm 139:16 translated "unformed substance" is golem (גֹּלֶם, Strong's H1564) — a wrapped-up, folded mass, an embryo before it takes recognizable shape. It pictures a life not yet formed, curled and hidden from human sight.
Here is what makes this word remarkable: it appears once in the entire Hebrew Bible. Out of the hundreds of thousands of words across the whole Old Testament, golem is used in exactly one verse. God could have used any of several Hebrew terms for a forming life. He chose this single-use word — as if the vocabulary was reserved for this moment alone.
And the declaration David makes about that golem is extraordinary: "Your eyes saw my unformed substance." Before David had eyes, God's eyes were on him. Before his limbs could take shape, his days were being written. The golem — the unfinished, pre-formed version of a person — was already the subject of God's attentive, purposeful gaze.
The book being filled in that verse was not a journal of events to observe. It was a book of days already formed. The days were not recorded after they happened — they were written before the golem became a person. Your destiny was inscribed before you had form.
Why It Matters
God did not wait until you had form to write your days. He saw the golem — the unfinished, pre-shaped version of you — and your purpose was already written. Nothing that happened in the forming process surprised Him.
